TO RENT OR BUY: TAKE IT FROM A PRO

We recently interviewed Crystal Jackson, an entrepreneur with over 10 years of experience in the property management business. She has 8 years of experience and received her licensure from a local real estate institute in the Upstate. She got her start in the property management business after graduating college with a B.A. Degree in English. As we spoke with Crystal, she was able to shed some light on the major differences between renting and buying. She also explained that renters can have just as much freedom as homeowners when decorating their apartment. Here's our Q&A session!

Why do most people choose apartment living over homeownership?

It is more convenient and flexible. The biggest benefit of apartment living is that you have the ability to choose the length of time you want to live in a specific location, and they can buy-out if necessary without damaging their credit or the need to find a buyer before moving.

What advice would you give to first time renters or first time homeowners?

Rent or buy in a location that will provide you with a live, work, play environment. It is smart to choose a location that adds variety to your life and options without a lot of travel. For homeowners, this can help with your re-sale value and for renter's, it limits your work and activity commute.

What is the most sought after feature in apartment living?

Space is the most asked about feature.

What rights does a renter have as far as designing/decorating his or her own apartment?

It really depends on the community's rules. Most places allow renters to decorate their home as they choose as long as they are not making any structural changes or make changes that would interfere or alter the look of the community.

Share any advice or expertise on choosing the best community to live in?

Find something that is right for your budget and close to all the things you love. It is also important to find a community that fits your lifestyle. If you like the outdoors, find a place with nature trails!

Share any little known renting guidelines, or information on renters' insurance.

Renter's insurance is very important. It can cover things such as carpet replacement if needed once you vacate the apartment, pet issues inside of your apartment, damage caused by flooding. It is definitely worth the price, and the inexpensive cost makes it a necessity. Whether your community requires it or not, you should invest in protecting your living space and your personal belongings.
